My Favorite Chatterbait Rod: The Duckett Zeus 7’3 Medium Heavy rod is King

A question I always get asked is “What chatterbait rod are you using?” I think it’s a question that many people ask regularly, as a chatterbait has an action that no other lure possesses. The extreme vibration, coupled with a jig head and single hook, makes it a unique bait. Many rod manufacturers make rods specifically for baits and situations, such as top water, jerkbaits, crankbaits, and flipping. But a chatterbait rod is hard to define.

What goes into a good chatterbait rod?

A good chatterbait rod has a tip that allows for a lot of feel for the bait. I like the rod that will allow me to experience the vibration of the lure. This usually requires a softer tip. Another characteristic of a good chatterbait rod, along with the soft tip, is that it has a good backbone to the overall rod. Many times, we are fishing the bait around submerged grass beds, wood, and rocks. So you want a rod that can rip a chatterbait out of grass or cover, and allow the bait to have its natural action.

What rod to use?

Personally, I have found the Duckett Zeus 7’3ft Medium Heavy rod works perfectly for chatterbaits in the 1/4 oz to 1/2 oz range. This model has the right action tip and backbone to work a chatterbait correctly through all sorts of cover. The Duckett Zeus model rods also have larger rod guides which I specifically like for chatterbaits. For baits in the 3/4 oz and up I’ll switch to a 7’6 ft Medium Heavy to Heavy action. Check them out at your local retailer or at www.duckettfishing.com. You will be pleased with the overall performance and have your ”go to” chatterbait rod.
